American Legion Post 56 Meeting Hall was repurposed from a Cheriton grocery store. What many feared would become just another rowdy beer hall has instead turned out to be one of their community’s most important partners. “The fact is, this has been a gathering place for the community seven days a week,” Post 56 former Commander Joe Vaccaro says. “We have other groups who come here to meet. It’s a very family-oriented post.”
Veteran Rex Ingram, who served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, in his living room. Above the fireplace is a painting of his grandchildren and a box containing his medals from years of service.
Veteran and former Post Commander Bruce Arnold on his dock with his boat as a storm rolls through.
Auxiliary member Susan Miller outside her family business, Clams Direct.
Veteran Bill Burton, who served in Korea and then Vietnam as a River Rat and Black Beret, in his living room. He is surrounded by carvings that he has made since his retirement from the Navy.
A butterfly carving that Bill Burton gave me as a gift.
